Al-Qaeda
claims London bombings
Al-Qaeda's deputy leader has said
for the first time the group carried out the 7 July suicide bombings
in London, in which 52 people were killed.
In a videotaped message aired on Arab television
station al-Jazeera, Ayman al-Zawahri said al-Qaeda had the "honour"
of carrying out the attacks. Osama Bin Laden's lieutenant had previously
praised the bombings and blamed them on the UK's foreign policy.
Seven
held in security operation
Seven foreign nationals have been detained
under powers allowing deportations for national security reasons,
the Home Office has said.
They were detained in London and Greater Manchester in an
Immigration Service and police operation, it said.
The unnamed seven were to be held in "secure prison service accommodation".
Sources told the BBC some of those held were among eight men cleared
in April of plotting to spread ricin and other poisons on the UK's
streets. At the Old Bailey trial, Kamel Bourgass, 31, was jailed for
17 years for plotting to spread the poisons.
Demand for business security advice soars
The London bombings last month have prompted a surge of inquiries
from businesses about security and how to remain trading in the event
of a terrorist attack.
Requests for information and advice have soared 75 per cent since
August 1 at Continuity Forum, a leading independent agency offering
guidance on contingency planning in the UK.
